New climate report calls for urgent, sustainable action

A recent report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reveals that climate change is accelerating at an alarming pace. Now in its 25th edition, the WMO’s annual State of the Global Climate reports that global temperatures, carbon dioxide concentrations, and sea levels are rising to dangerous levels.
The report was launched on Thursday at a joint press conference with the UN in New York. “There is no longer any time for delay,” said UN Secretary General António Guterres. This week, the UN also hosted a high level meeting on climate change and sustainable development. Data from the report gives new urgency for innovative solutions to environmental problems.

USAID invests $90 million for US-Egypt research partnership

This week, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that it had awarded $90 million to three American universities to establish partnerships with institutions in Egypt.
The investment will support the development of three Centers of Excellence that address Egypt’s energy, water, and agriculture issues. The formal partnership will allow researchers at American institutions to collaborate with Egyption scholars to find innovative solutions. U.S. universities that received funding include Cornell University, American University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). These institutions will partner with Ain Shams University, Cairo University, and Alexandria University in Egypt.

What to Look for at the Nepal Investment Summit

This week, Nepal will be holding the third edition of the Nepal Investment Summit following previous success from the second summit held in 2017.
Organizers of summit hope to promote Nepal as a promising investment destination bv showcasing a variety projects categorized into 7 different fields- transport infrastructure, agriculture, education and health, tourism infrastructure, urban infrastructure, hydropower, and the private sector. There will be nearly 70 projects with a total investment value of $24 billion presented to the 600 foreign investors projected to attend.
TOP100 Philippines Competition Declares Two Start-up Winners

The TOP100 competition in the Philippines brought together many of the most promising startups based on the island nation. The competition this year was fierce. The two emerging winners were startups Educredit.PH and SocialLight.
Educredit.PH works to help people finance their education while SocialLight aims to provide free or subsidised internet access to low-income groups in the Philippines. Both companies are centered around a desire to help the general population and will advance to the Echelon Asia Summit 2019 to compete for additional funding.
